This ground beetle has translucent violin shaped elytra. Their flat body allows them to live in cracks or under bark , where they predate insect larvae. They secrete butyric acid for defence. They can fly.

The larvae live in layers of Polyporus bracket fungus, they take 9 months to develop and a further 8 weeks to pupate.
