Quality code/ Definitions

Butterflies and insects are graded for quality but there is always a degree of interpretation involved.

We have therefore given a few examples of defects:

EX PUPA - Generally the best quality possible

A1 - The best quality that can reasonably be expected (minimal scuffs on wing acceptable) from a wild caught specimen (legs are not guaranteed in Lepidoptera)

A1- - Minor defects that do not detract from the specimen (e.g. minor scuffs on the wing, small peripheral splits(few mm) or nicks , dislodged antenna -(easily reattached with white glue))

A - More obvious defects,(e.g. broken antennae, loss of distal tarsus on an insect, longer splits and nicks)

A2 - Obvious damage but still a good representative of the species (e.g. missing leg on insect, tear on wing, missing antennae)

Any collection data will be added when possible.

Why does my Morpho butterfly not have its abdomen?

Many male Morpho species have their abdomen removed by the collectors in the field. This is done because they store fat from their larval stage in the abdomen, and this can leak out discolouring the wings. Females don't seem to have the same issue, so generally are sold with the abdomen intact.

Abbreviations used on site

m = male

f = female

p = pair (male and female)

pc = sex not identified

ep = ex pupa

set = specimen that has already been pinned out and set

w = wingspan (Lepidoptera)

L = length from tip of horns on head to the back of the abdomen. Excludes leg length (Insects)

NB unless otherwise stated, all specimens on the site are sold folded in paper and require rehydration, pinning and setting by the customer.
