Automeris is a large genus with about 120 species . They often have a leaf like appearance but they also have a pair of bright eyespots which they flash if disturbed. they are found in cental and South America.

The moths are sexually dimorphic -males brighter , females brown and larger

The larvae feed from Quercus (oak) and Rubus , but they have urticating spines and can sting and cluster together for protection.
