Agrias Species
This genus of butterflies must compete with Morphos to be the most popular butterflies from the Neotropics ( the Birdwings being the Asian competition)
Experts compete in identifying 'new 'species but there are probably many more names than actual species! They express great phenotypic variation and because they are rare and have unknown geographic ranges, there is great temptation for identifying new subspecies.
They range from Mexico to Brazil, but are not known on the west face of the Andes from Ecuador to Bolivia. They are fast flyers.
