Diaethria Species
This genus is easily recognised by the distinct 88 figure on the hindwing underside on a white back ground. The upperside are either blue or green. The host plants are Sapindaceae or Ulmaceae. These can congregate in huge numbers in the dry season. Some of the species are anthrophilic , and this fondness for human homes has produced a tradition in Costa rica , that if one is in your home you should buy a lottery ticket with 88 or 89 in it!
The adults feed on rotting fruit and dung, the males are attracted to urine soaked soil .
