Callicore pygas is a widespread butterfly with 8 subspecies, that have different patterns on the underwing . In the type form (first described specimen) of pygas the white band and the blue scaling on the hindwings are replaced by pale yellow.

The upperside of pygas is dark brown, with a large bright red patch occupying the basal half of the forewings. The hindwings are overlaid with a dull blue sheen, and additionally have a narrow broken pale blue submarginal band. As with other Callicore species, females are paler in colour than males, and have reduced blue scaling.

This species is found in Venezuela, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and the upper Amazonian region of Brazil,

This is found in tropical forest at a height of 200-1000m and they are usually seen alone at sandbanks collecting minerals . The eggs are probably white

The BD butterfly has a broad region and is found throughout Amazonia. It lives in lowland areas and often visits human habitations. It likes to imbibe salt from either urine soaked sand banks or from sweaty humans! It feeds on fermented fruit and is a powerful flyer.

The forewing has 2 bright red bands , with a single red band on the hindwing

The eggs are laid singularly on Sapindaceae and white in colour. The caterpillars are green with large spikes on the head and shorter spikes on the abdominal tip.
