These were formally thought to be a subfamily of Scarab beetles ,but recent research has confirmed that they are a separate family . They feed from petals, pollen , nectar and fruit , and can fly a long way searching for food. There are about 4000 species and they are usually colourful with patterned textures

The epipleuron (the lateral sclerite between the thoracic dorsal tergum and ventral sternum components of the exoskeleton) is easily seen
The border lateral to the elytra edge is wavy
The antennal insertion is visible from above
Most species are carnivorous feeding off larvae or nymphs. The larvae are important decomposers living in decaying vegetable matter and faeces.
