The 20-30 Caligo( latin for mist/fog) species are Brassolidae (owl) butterflies. They are large specimens that all share a combination of zigzag striations and ocelli (eye spots) on the underwing. They are sluggish flyers and the males have secondary sexual organs or scent patches (oily patches on f.w.v. or hair brushes in the fold on the anal margin of the hindwing)
