Cicada

Cicada are sound producing insects (Homoptera) that have two pairs of wings, large compound eyes and three simple eyes. There are about 3000 species

The noise is generated by males from vibrating membranes in the base of the abdomen and create 3 types of song- an alert (warning), courtship and a congregational tune.In china they used to be placed in cages for their songs.

The nymphs live underground and feed by sucking fluids from plant roots and undergo five moults before appearing as adults. Some species have 13 or 17 year period cycles with mass emergences.
