There are about 22 species of Hypolimnas ( Diadems or eggflies) . They are found in Africa, Asia and Oceana. Only one , H. misippus is found in the Americas

Hypolimnas bolina has a wide geographical range, from Madagascar to South Asia , Australia and Japan.

There is sexual dimorphism and the female has many Morphs. To the West it mimics the poisonous Euploea species (Batesian mimicry) , whilst further East it is polymorphic but not a mimic

It lives in scrub, woods and deciduous forest
