Male and females differ. Males are brown with angular white spots on all wings , with great contrast between the basal and outer wing sections. There is a faint pink band on the underwing to the outside of the postmedian line. Females are yellowy brown with angular white spots largest on the fore wing. Underside of hind wing is mahogany red at its deepest colour.

Both sexes are darker in the summer brood.
